He was born in Santiago de Cuba. Being 15 years old, he started on practicing weight lifting and about ten years after, he was acknowledged at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games (56 kgs), becoming the First Champion of this sort of sport in Latin America. Before that he was the sixth in Montreal, 1976 but boasting the privilege of having set his first world record at Germany, 1977. He is the Cuban having the larger amount of high records: Nine world records, four Olympic and eleven world records in junior category. After he retired as athlete, he occupied diverse responsibilities as federative until he became national commission representative in weight lifting.
