He was born at the Havana-based municipality of El Cerro. He is part of the brilliant roster of immortals of boxing and his statue rises and gives pride to the entrance of the famous Madison Square Garden in New York. He managed to exhibit simultaneously the world belts in Boxing in the light junior (1931) and in lightweight (1932). He had an excellent career: 126 successes, ten defeats and six stalemates. He knocked down 44 times and fell down only a pair of times.
