Considered the best jazz piano player in the world, he was born in the small town of Quivicán in the province of Havana. He founded the Irakere ensemble and has traveled, with his group or as a soloist, around the five continents. During recent years, his quality has granted him five Grammy Awards. He defines his work as part of “a tree with Afro-Cuban and Spanish roots which trunk is the music we do, and the branches and the flowers are the ones that change, grow, go ugly, and fall, but they grow again.” He also claims that “art opens its own way through all barriers”.
