  CARLOS MANUEL DE CÉSPEDES Y DEL CASTILLO  (1819-1874)

He was born in the legendary Camagüey. He is known as the Father of the Homeland. He was the first Cuban President during the Republic on Arms. Writer and lawyer, on October 10th, 1868 he took up arms against the Spanish domain and in his sugar mill, La Demajagua, freed the slaves and subscribed the Declaration of Independence, which marks the beginning of the Ten Years’ War.
