Singer and founder of the Buena Vista Social Club, he was born in San Luis, Santiago de Cuba. When he was almost a child, and upon the death of his mother, he had no choice but earning his own living singing in the streets of Santiago. He quickly ascended and made it to sing in the best band of the region: the Chepín-Choven orchestra. In time, he would take part in the Afro-Cuban All-Stars disk, nominated for a Grammy Award, which he achieved with the one entitled “Buena Vista Social Club”. He was awarded another Grammy Latino in 2004 by Best Traditional Music Album with the CD “Buenos Hermanos”.
